Award winning vineyards and wineries have made the North Fork a major wine center in the Northeast. There are over forty vineyards and wineries on the North Fork alone, varying in size and production and each with its own character and varietals. Most offer summer music series and special outdoor events such as Sauvignon Blanc & Peconic Bay Oysters, Chardonnay and Merlot festivals or open fire pit barbeques and bocce tournaments to name a few. Private tours and tastings are available at most wineries.
Southold Town, with its heritage museums, historical walks and quaint shops, lies less than one mile to the east. Four miles further east is Greenport Village, a quaint working fishing town with both maritime and railroad museums. There you will find shops, art galleries, restaurants and Long Island's biggest carousel. Further east are East Marion and Orient, with their own unique and historic atmosphere. The Orient Point Ferry can take you to the Mystic Seaport restoration and aquarium, the Pequot Indian Museum, and the famous gaming palaces of Foxwood and Mohegan Sun. West of Southold are the hamlets of New Suffolk, Cutchogue, and Mattituck. Each has its own special character with shops, antique stores, beaches, restaurants. Riverhead, with its own highly acclaimed aquarium, hosts many events such as Blues and Jazz Festivals as well as the annual Polish Festival. Nearby are the Tanger Factory Outlet stores.
No matter what your destination is along the way you'll notice that picturesque farmstands are abundant along the roads between these towns and offer freshly harvested fruits and vegetables. Allow the numerous antique stores to spark your memory and imagination, while Saturday morning yard sales often yield treasures.
Southold Township has a seemingly endless number of bays, inlets, creeks and, of course, Long Island Sound. Beaches are everywhere, fish are plentiful and water sports flourish.
Restaurants are many and varied, serving everything from fresh seafood, Italian to French gourmet to pub style. Many of our restaurants have earned accolades in reviews for Gourmet Magazine, the New York Times and others. Ellis House has all of their menus to help you plan your evening out.
Swimming, boating, kayaking, golfing, bike riding, birding and simple walks on the beach can fill your days in whatever way you choose.
